Australian Tennis Players Shine at US Open

Jordan Thompson has successfully advanced to the third round of the US Open by defeating Hubert Hurkacz, the world number seven. This match marked a significant moment in the tournament as Hurkacz is the highest seed eliminated from the men’s singles draw thus far.

Joining Thompson in the third round are fellow Australians Alex de Minaur and Chris O’Connell. De Minaur managed to recover from an early deficit to win against Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen, while O’Connell secured his position by defeating Italian Mattia Bellucci.

This year’s US Open has witnessed Australia’s best start in nearly 30 years, with four Australian men now set to compete in the last 32. The last time this happened was in 1997.

Thompson’s victory came in impressive fashion, winning with a score of 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, 7-5. After falling behind early in the first set, he rallied to claim the match against Hurkacz, who has been noted for his strong serve.

De Minaur, the 10th seed, expressed relief after securing his place in the third round for six out of the last seven years. He overcame an injury setback to perform strongly, winning in straight sets after initially trailing in the match.

O’Connell also showed resilience, overcoming a drop in momentum after losing a set to ultimately secure his match and set up a challenge against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner.

Meanwhile, Thanasi Kokkinakis faced disappointment as he was eliminated by Nuno Borges, suffering a second-round loss just days after beating a former grand slam finalist.
