MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) – Autumn Lockwood made history on February 10, 2025, by becoming the first Black female coach to win a Super Bowl while leading the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. This landmark achievement comes in her third year with the team.
Lockwood joined the Eagles coaching staff in August 2022, initially serving as the team’s strength and conditioning associate. By the 2023 offseason, she was promoted to an associate performance coach. Her journey in football began after her graduation from University High School in 2012, followed by a degree in criminal justice from the University of Arizona in 2015, and a master’s degree in sports management from East Tennessee State University in 2020.
In addition to her recent victory, Lockwood’s contributions to the Eagles were notable from the outset. She became only the fourth woman to coach in a Super Bowl back in 2022, when the Eagles made their first ever Super Bowl appearance. Her work has been instrumental in shaping the team’s performance on and off the field.
“I’m honored and grateful for the support I’ve received from my team and mentors throughout my career,” Lockwood said in a post-game interview. “Winning this Super Bowl represents so much more than just a trophy; it means breaking barriers and paving the way for the next generation of female coaches in the NFL.”
The Eagles’ victory is a pivotal moment in sports history, reflecting the ongoing evolution of the NFL towards greater inclusivity and diversity within coaching and management roles. Autumn Lockwood stands as a role model for aspiring coaches, especially women and people of color, within the realm of professional football.
