Brock Nelson Colorado Avalanche Trade

DENVER, Colorado — The Colorado Avalanche and center Brock Nelson may be close to a new contract agreement ahead of the NHL free agency period. NHL insider David Pagnotta reported that both parties are exploring the potential of an extension.

Nelson, who was acquired at the trade deadline from the New York Islanders, contributed to the Avalanche’s postseason but faced criticism for his playoff performance, scoring only one goal in the first round against the Dallas Stars. Despite this, he had a productive regular season, tallying six goals and seven assists in 19 games.

The Avalanche have been in search of a reliable second-line center since Nazem Kadri departed for the Calgary Flames after winning the Stanley Cup in 2022. Nelson was expected to fill that role, making the stakes higher with the assets traded to acquire him, including top prospect Calum Ritchie and draft picks.

Pagnotta shared updates on social media, suggesting that negotiations between Nelson’s agent and the Avalanche will ramp up in June, prior to the start of free agency. There seems to be mutual interest from both sides in solidifying Nelson’s future in Colorado.

Critics have noted Nelson’s lack of playoff impact, but the Avalanche are hopeful that a full season will lead to improved postseason performance next year. The new contract’s terms are yet to be finalized, but speculations indicate that a deal valued between $25 million for a four-year contract or $26 million for a five-year contract could be on the table.

NHL analysts expect the situation to unfold further as the offseason progresses, especially with the approaching NHL Draft Combine. The Avalanche are looking to strengthen their roster and may prioritize trades over free agency as part of their strategy.

“We want to see Brock contribute at a higher level next season,” one Avalanche official stated. “This is a critical time for our team.”
