Avalanche Stars Playoff Game April 2025

DALLAS, TX (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche launched their postseason with a commanding 5-1 victory over the Dallas Stars in Game 1 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs Saturday night at the American Airlines Center. Nathan MacKinnon played a pivotal role, contributing two goals and an assist, as the Avalanche took a 1-0 series lead.

In a game marked by unusual goals, MacKinnon’s sharp performance was highlighted by a shot that deflected off Stars defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin, eluding goalie Jake Oettinger with just under five minutes left in the second period. This score came during an extended power play due to a double minor penalty against Dallas.

Before that, MacKinnon assisted on Artturi Lehkonen’s goal, which was the first score of the game. Lehkonen managed to direct the puck into the net even while falling after a collision, successfully avoiding a kicking motion during review. Coach Jared Bednar acknowledged the significance of these goals while applauding Lehkonen’s persistence.

Despite being outshot 24-23, the Avalanche capitalized on their chances, converting on two power plays. Devon Toews added Colorado’s third goal with 7:04 remaining in the game, before MacKinnon sealed the match with an empty-netter, his 50th career playoff goal.

Dallas’ only goal came from Nick Ritchie during a power play in the third period, but their efforts were not enough to overcome the strong performance of Avalanche goalie Mackenzie Blackwood, who made 23 saves in his playoff debut.

The Avalanche’s victory marked the Stars’ eighth consecutive defeat in playoff series openers since 2022, continuing their struggle to find success in the postseason. Coach Pete DeBoer has faced challenges with series openers, leading the team to a disappointing 0-7 record in these critical games.

Stars forward Wyatt Johnston expressed optimism despite the loss, noting the team’s experience in overcoming a 1-0 series deficit. Historical context favors Dallas, as they reached the Western Conference Final in each of the past two seasons even after dropping their first game.

Game 2 is set for Monday night in Dallas, as both teams eye a crucial matchup that could shape the remainder of the series.
