Valeri Nichushkin Colorado Avalanche Stanley Cup Playoffs

DENVER, Colorado – The pressure is on for Valeri Nichushkin and the Colorado Avalanche as they head into Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Dallas Stars on Thursday night at Ball Arena. Despite his past success, Nichushkin has struggled to find his rhythm in this series, contributing just one goal in five games.

Frustration boiled over for the 30-year-old winger, who broke two sticks in recent games, including one during Monday’s loss to the Stars. Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar acknowledged Nichushkin’s performance, stating that like many players, he holds himself to high standards. “I don’t love seeing [him smash his sticks] because it means that he’s not happy with the way he’s playing,” Bednar said. “But I know he’s capable of turning it around.”

Nichushkin’s lone goal came in Game 3 when he was left unmarked by Matt Duchene. With no assists and a -3 rating in Game 5, his second line is under pressure to improve. Bednar has confidence in Nichushkin, citing a strong performance in Game 4 as evidence of his potential. “He was one of the best players on the ice, and I know that he can repeat that,” Bednar said.

Last postseason, Nichushkin led the Avalanche with nine goals, making his current struggles more concerning for the team’s playoff aspirations. He appeared to have found success last season, contributing vital plays until a suspension sidelined him before an important game against the Stars.

As the Avalanche prepare to face elimination, everything hinges on the performance of key players, particularly Nichushkin. Bednar insists that the team must work hard for success. “It’s just about putting in the work first, and the rest of your game will follow.” With the stakes high, Nichushkin’s ability to step up may be decisive in the quest for another Stanley Cup.
