Avalanche Warning Issued for North Oregon Cascades Over Weekend

PORTLAND, Ore. — The National Weather Service has issued an avalanche warning for the North Oregon Cascades effective Saturday at 5:07 p.m. until Sunday at 6 p.m. The warning comes as heavy wet snow and rain threaten to create hazardous conditions across the region.
According to the weather service, “Very dangerous conditions are expected overnight and continue into Sunday as heavy wet snow and rain overload a dry and weak snowpack. Very large natural avalanches may occur and could descend into lower elevation forested areas.”
Travelers in backcountry areas are urged to heed this warning, as the service reports that “these will be more than enough to bury, injure, or kill backcountry travelers.” Avalanche survival rates drop significantly after 15 minutes for victims who do not succumb to trauma, making vigilance and preparedness critical.
Outdoor enthusiasts are reminded to familiarize themselves with the three key factors that can lead to an avalanche. Always assess if you are on or below slopes that can avalanche and have crucial safety essentials packed, including avalanche beacons, shovels, and probes.
It is also advised that backcountry travelers practice realistic rescue scenarios before venturing into snowy terrains. Advance Local Weather Alerts, powered by United Robots, highlights the importance of staying updated with real-time weather data.
