Aviator Sports Complex Faces Closure Amid Community Efforts to Save It

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — With just 13 days left until the potential closure of the Aviator Sports Complex, parents and young athletes are intensifying their campaign to keep the facility operational. The complex is viewed by many as a crucial foundation for athletic dreams and development.
“I have been an Aviator for four years, which is almost half my life,” shared a young athlete who credits the facility with shaping their competitive journey.
Parents emphasize the vital role Aviator plays in fostering emotional, social, and physical growth for their children. “As parents, we look to give our kids every opportunity to grow, and this is it,” said Laura Morabito, a parent of a young gymnast.
To galvanize support, one dedicated parent traveled to Washington, D.C., to present “dream packages” to local elected officials. “I thought that it would be a great example for kids—that they can make an impact,” explained Olga Vaschuk, whose child is a figure skater at Aviator.
U.S. Representative Nicole Malliotakis has been communicating with the National Park Service (NPS) to expedite the identification of a new operator for the complex. “There is someone who has expressed interest, and the National Park Service is reviewing that application,” said Malliotakis. “We are hopeful we can get this approved and hit the ground running so we don’t lose any time in the season.”
The NPS has not commented directly on this matter but previously acknowledged offering a one-year contract extension through April 2026. However, they indicated that no final decision will be made until the operator application review is completed.
As the April 14 deadline looms, parents and athletes are filled with anxiety but remain committed. “We have no idea what’s going to happen, so we really, really are hopeful,” remarked Evelyn Gugel, a parent of children involved in gymnastics and hockey at Aviator. “We are all working hard.”
The outcome will determine whether Aviator continues to serve as a vital sports hub for the community or if it will close its doors permanently, affecting countless young athletes.
