LAS VEGAS, Feb. 15, 2025 — MMA fighter Avila is set to make her long-awaited return to the octagon this Saturday, taking on Cavalcanti in a preliminary bantamweight contest. The fight marks Avila’s first appearance in over a year after recovering from significant injuries sustained in her last bout.
Avila’s last fight was a submission loss to Miesha Tate in December 2023, where she suffered a devastating knee injury early on. Reflecting on that experience, Avila shared, “I went into that fight injured. I shouldn’t have followed through with that fight. I completely blew out my right knee in the first five seconds of the fight.” Avila’s determination saw her push through the pain, but the injuries forced her to undergo two ACL surgeries.
“I went into surgery the next week after that, so I’m bionic now,” Avila said. “This time around, I didn’t have a kid right after. I’m coming into this fight fully healthy. Everything’s 100 percent, so I have no excuses.”
The 36-year-old fighter, who has been out of action for more than a year, credits her recovery journey and determined mindset for her readiness. “When I’m healthy, I am unstoppable,” she said. Avila’s comeback is not just about returning to the ring; she is focused on regaining her footing in the competitive bantamweight division.
Avila faces Cavalcanti, who enters the fight on a six-fight winning streak, including a 3-0 start in her UFC career. Cavalcanti last fought in September, earning a split decision victory that solidified her place as a contender. “She’s an excellent striker. I’ve actually sparred against women that are on par with her,” Avila noted, emphasizing her preparation and experience against similar opponents in training.
As she gears up for the contest, Avila admits to being aware of Cavalcanti’s strengths, which include her counter-striking abilities. “I am aware of what’s happening, I just need to keep my cool,” Avila stated. She is looking forward to showcasing her skills and reintroducing herself to fans worldwide. “This is the fight to remind people who I am, and I fully expect her to run away from me,” she added. “So yeah, we’ll see how it plays out.”
With her health regained and confidence restored, Avila is ready to step back into the octagon and demonstrate her hard-earned resilience. Fans eagerly await her return, hoping for a showcase of the fighting spirit that has defined her career.
