Ayr United Eyes Burnley’s Joe Westley for Scottish Championship Push
BURNLEY, England — Scottish Championship side Ayr United is targeting Burnley forward Joe Westley for a loan move this winter, according to reports. The 20-year-old striker, who has spent time on loan in England’s fifth tier, could join the Scottish second-tier club managed by Celtic and Scotland legend Scott Brown.
Westley joined Burnley in August 2021 and has since gained experience with loan spells at AFC Fylde and Rochdale. At Fylde, he scored three goals and provided two assists in 13 league appearances, showcasing his potential in men’s football. However, his recent stint at Rochdale saw limited playing time, with just three league appearances.
“Joe is a talented young player who has shown promise in his loan spells,” said a source close to the negotiations. “Ayr United offers him a chance to play under an ambitious manager and in a competitive environment.”
Ayr United, currently second in the Scottish Championship, is pushing for promotion, and Brown sees Westley as a valuable addition to his squad. “Scott Brown is very keen on bringing Joe in,” the source added. “He believes the player can thrive in Scotland.”
However, the deal faces complications due to Burnley’s current loan arrangements. The Clarets have several players on loan outside of England, including Zeki Amdouni at Benfica, Han Noah Massengo at Auxerre, and Andreas Hountondji at Standard Liege. FIFA rules limit the number of international loans a club can sanction, potentially hindering Westley’s move.
Westley’s contract with Burnley runs until the summer, and a loan to Ayr United could provide him with a platform to prove his worth to his parent club. “If the deal goes through, Joe will have the opportunity to showcase his talents in a team aiming for promotion,” the source noted.
As the January transfer window progresses, all eyes will be on whether Burnley can navigate the loan regulations to facilitate Westley’s move to Scotland.
