Aztecs Face Spartans in Key Mountain West Matchup
San Diego, CA – San Diego State University (SDSU) hosts San Jose State University (SJSU) on Saturday night in a crucial Mountain West Conference showdown. The Aztecs come into the game looking to solidify their lead in the conference, currently sitting at 8-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play. The match begins at 7:30 p.m. at Snapdragon Stadium.
SDSU, under coach Sean Lewis, is hoping to secure a Mountain West Championship title by continuing their recent success. They have scored over 40 points in two conference games and limited several opponents to just one touchdown or less in other wins. Lewis emphasized the team’s focus on adaptability and resilience despite recent offensive struggles.
“We control our own destiny, and we’ll continue to find ways to win with the personnel that we have,” Lewis said, noting the importance of unifying the team’s efforts on both offense and defense.
On the other hand, SJSU stands at 6-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play, but they are reeling from a disastrous 55-10 loss against Nevada last week, the least successful team in the conference. Head coach Ken Niumatalolo expressed his disappointment in a media meeting, calling it one of the worst performances in his coaching career.
“I apologize,” Niumatalolo said, indicating a need for drastic improvements in his team’s performance. “We’re going to work our butts off to get that fixed.” With SJSU’s defensive struggles and changes in the coaching staff, the challenge becomes greater as they face a formidable Aztecs team.
The Aztecs face their own injury challenges, with quarterback Jayden Denegal dealing with physical issues and key receivers Jordan Napier and Jacob Bostick out for the season. This means SDSU will likely rely heavily on their running game, with standout Lucky Sutton leading the charge.
SJSU’s quarterback Walker Eget, however, poses a significant threat, ranking second nationally in passing yards per game. Lewis noted Eget’s accuracy and understanding of the game, emphasizing the need for strong defensive pressure on him to hinder his performance.
With both teams aiming to bolster their positions in the Mountain West standings, fans can expect an exciting game filled with intensity and strategy.
In tandem with the game, the university has announced a “Throwback to the Classics” promotion featuring throwback food prices, aiming to enhance the atmosphere as the Aztecs take the field on their home turf.
