Wisconsin Men's Basketball Upset Purdue Highlights

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — In a thrilling matchup on Saturday, the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team overcame early struggles to defeat the No. 7 Purdue Boilermakers, showcasing their resilience and team dynamics despite the absence of a key player.

Redshirt freshman guard Jack Janicki stepped up during the game, filling in as the primary backup point guard for Wisconsin (20-5, 10-4 Big Ten), which faced significant pressure playing at Mackey Arena in front of 14,876 fans. Janicki secured his first basket at the 12:18 mark of the first half, executing a back-cut play that the team had practiced all week.

“It does feel good to get your first one to go in and get a little bit of a rhythm, especially when you’re on the road,” Janicki noted. He ended the game with a career-high 11 points, shooting 4-of-6 from the field without committing a turnover.

The Badgers were forced to adapt quickly after reserve point guard Kamari McGee was ejected in the first half due to a Flagrant 2 personal foul. Head coach Greg Gard praised Janicki for handling the pressure, particularly in the second half, where he played crucial minutes with no turnovers. “Eighteen assists, three turnovers in this place? I’ve been here when it’s been the other way around,” Gard said, emphasizing the difficult environment Janicki faced.

Janicki, who started his journey as a walk-on, has earned the trust of his teammates throughout the season. He had previously contributed nine points in a significant upset against then-No. 9 Arizona, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure. “I had a good start to the year, I thought. And then the beginning of Big Ten play, I was just sort of … adjusting,” Janicki said, reflecting on his season thus far.

His teammate, graduate guard John Tonje, expressed confidence in Janicki’s capabilities saying, “We may not have a lot of experience with him running the point, but each game gives him more opportunities to grow.” The trust the team has in each other played a significant role in their victory.

Wisconsin’s tactical adjustments and persistence shone through in key moments of the game. Janicki crafted an essential offensive rebound that led to a three-point play, part of a run that solidified their lead. “That was one of (Tonje’s) best passes of the year,” Janicki said after making a critical three-pointer that boosted Wisconsin to a 71-60 lead in the second half.

As the game progressed, Janicki demonstrated a solid awareness on the court, making smart cuts and utilizing his teammates effectively. With the victory against Purdue, the Badgers have not only solidified their reputation as Big Ten contenders but also provided a glimpse into Janicki’s potential growth as a key player in future matches.

Wisconsin’s performance may continue to shift perceptions as they advance in the season, setting the stage for exciting outcomes in upcoming games.
