Baltimore Orioles Designate Craig Kimbrel for Assignment Amid Struggles
Former closer Craig Kimbrel was designated for assignment by the Baltimore Orioles following a string of challenging performances. Kimbrel, a nine-time All-Star, surrendered six runs on three hits in just two-thirds of an inning during a recent 10-0 home defeat to the San Francisco Giants, a series of outings which solidified his demotion.
“Tough day,” manager Brandon Hyde remarked. “We have so much respect for Craig and his career. It’s never easy to say goodbye to someone who’s done a lot.” Despite leading the Orioles with 23 saves before the All-Star break, Kimbrel’s performance dipped significantly, ending with a 5.33 ERA and six blown saves over recent months.
General Manager Mike Elias initially signed Kimbrel to a $13 million contract in December, hoping to fill the gap left by Félix Bautista, who had accrued 48 saves the previous year before an elbow injury sidelined him for the season. Hyde further commented, “The game here against New York, that was a struggle, and he never got rolling after that.”
As part of a corresponding roster adjustment, the Orioles promoted right-hander Bryan Baker from Triple-A Norfolk to the major league team. Additionally, Seranthony Domínguez, acquired from the Phillies in a July trade, will take over Kimbrel’s role as closer.
The Orioles have lost eight of their last 11 games, trailing the New York Yankees by four games for first in the American League East. Despite Kimbrel’s early season successes, his post All-Star break performance and an inability to secure saves against teams like the Yankees and the Miami Marlins contributed to Baltimore’s recent setbacks.
