BARCELONA, Spain — FC Barcelona announced Tuesday the appointment of Xavier O’Callaghan as the club’s new director of professional sports. The decision was made during a routine board meeting, marking a significant shift in the club’s leadership structure.

O’Callaghan, a former handball player for FC Barcelona, has been with the club in various capacities since 1986. Most recently, he served as the manager of the handball, futsal, and roller hockey sections since 2021. Prior to that, he was responsible for the club’s New York office in the United States.

“Xavier O’Callaghan is a person of long-standing experience within the club,” a spokesperson for FC Barcelona stated. “His dedication and understanding of our values make him the ideal candidate for this role.”

O’Callaghan’s playing career with FC Barcelona spanned 19 years, during which he won numerous titles, including eight leagues, seven Champions titles, and an Olympic bronze medal with the Spanish national team in 2000. His number 4 jersey is one of the few retired at the Palau Blaugrana, the club’s handball arena.

In addition to his sports career, O’Callaghan holds a degree in Business Administration and Economics from the University of Barcelona and a Master’s in sports management. His transition from player to executive has been marked by a focus on strategic management and team building.

The board also confirmed the resignation of Juli Guiu, who was responsible for the Commercial and Marketing Departments and served as a board member for Barça Studios and BLM. The club expressed gratitude for Guiu’s commitment and contributions over the years.

O’Callaghan’s appointment comes at a critical time for FC Barcelona, as the club aims to rebuild its professional sports teams and address financial challenges. His experience and deep connection to the club’s culture are expected to play a pivotal role in achieving these goals.
