Barcelona’s Yamal Set to Extend Contract After Stellar Season

BENGALURU, India — Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal is poised to extend his contract with the La Liga club beyond 2026, confirmed his agent Jorge Mendes on Wednesday. The 17-year-old Spanish international has emerged as a key player for the club this season, contributing significantly to their success.
After winning the 2024 Golden Boy award, which recognizes Europe’s top young football talent, Yamal has made a remarkable impact this season, netting 11 goals and providing 16 assists in 35 appearances across all competitions. Since his senior debut in April 2023, the academy product has played 86 matches for Barcelona, underscoring his importance to the team.
“Lamine is going to continue at Barca; the important thing now is to think about sporting matters,” Mendes stated in a press conference following a meeting with Barcelona president Joan Laporta in Lisbon. The upcoming commitment is a major step for the club as they aim to secure their promising talent long-term.
Barcelona is currently gearing up for a crucial Champions League match against Portuguese side Benfica, scheduled for later on Wednesday. This match marks the first leg of the round of 16, where Yamal’s performance could be pivotal as the team looks to advance further in the tournament.
Mendes emphasized the smooth nature of the discussions surrounding Yamal’s contract extension, alleviating any speculation regarding the player’s future. “We’ve only talked about Lamine, and everything’s fine. He’s going to renew, he’s going to renew,” he affirmed.
Originally signed to a professional contract in 2024 that runs until 2026, Yamal’s rapid ascent in football has prompted Barcelona to revisit his contract terms. Currently on a minimum senior wage with performance-related bonuses, his increasing importance to the squad is leading to negotiations for a significantly improved salary.
Reports indicate that Barcelona aims to extend Yamal’s contract through to 2030, ensuring that a central figure in their future framework is retained at Camp Nou. The club’s ability to negotiate has been bolstered by the recent transfer of Vitor Roque, which has provided additional financial flexibility.
Sources close to the dealings described the renewal process as “advanced,” pending only final formalities. With Yamal set to celebrate his 18th birthday on July 13, 2025, the official confirmation of his new contract is expected soon thereafter.
As Barcelona prepares to face Benfica, the excitement surrounding Yamal’s contract extension brings a sense of relief to fans, who recognize the young forward as one of the club’s most shining prospects.
