PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Charles Barkley recently revealed a concerning story from a training camp experience involving Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid. During an appearance on “The Mike Missanelli Show,” Barkley recounted how he and 76ers legend Billy Cunningham attended a light practice session about five years ago.

The first day of training camp, as the team began their scrimmage, Barkley recalled Embiid opting to sit out. “Brett Brown was trying to connect with all the older guys, so he invited me and Billy Cunningham to practice one day,” Barkley said. Embiid’s decision to not participate left Cunningham frustrated. Barkley stated, “The best player? When they sit down instead of scrimmaging, this team is never going to be successful. Billy was pissed.”

Embiid has often faced scrutiny regarding his conditioning and work ethic. Despite his talent, he was limited to just 19 games during the 2024-2025 season due to knee issues. Barkley used the narrative to question whether Embiid’s lack of conditioning contributes to his frequent injuries.

Looking ahead, the Sixers remain cautious with Embiid as he deals with a troublesome left knee that required a second surgery in 14 months. The team has been employing a load management strategy to ensure he is healthy for the upcoming season.

As for the team’s future, there’s a lot of speculation around possible draft picks. The 76ers are eyeing top prospect Ace Bailey from Rutgers as the NBA Draft approaches, following a lackluster season. They are also considering other candidates, including Baylor’s VJ Edgecombe, indicating multiple potential pathways for the franchise.

With the draft just weeks away, the 76ers are actively exploring their options, hoping to revitalize their roster and return to playoff contention.
