PHOENIX, Ariz. — Oliver Miller, a former NBA center and an Arkansas Razorbacks standout, has passed away at the age of 54. His death was confirmed by several former teams and the National Basketball Retired Players Association on Wednesday. While the cause of death has not been disclosed, Miller publicly acknowledged a battle with cancer in February during an event honoring Arkansas’ 1990 Final Four team.

Miller, who was affectionately known as “The Big O” for his imposing 6-foot-9, 280-pound stature, played a crucial role in Arkansas’ success from 1988 to 1992. He averaged 12.2 points and 6.5 rebounds over his collegiate career, culminating in a run to the NCAA Tournament Final Four in 1990, where Arkansas fell to Duke.

Arkansas basketball issued a heartfelt tribute following Miller’s passing, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Arkansas legend Oliver Miller. A key member of the 1990 Final Four team, an SWC Hall of Famer, a first-round NBA draft pick, and a true embodiment of the Razorback spirit. We love you, Big O. Our thoughts are with his family.” Miller earned the Southwest Conference Player of the Year honors in 1991, solidifying his status as one of the program’s all-time greats.

In the 1992 NBA Draft, Miller was selected with the 22nd overall pick by the Phoenix Suns. He made a significant impact as a rookie, contributing to the Suns’ run to the 1993 NBA Finals alongside Charles Barkley, where he averaged 7.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks during the playoffs. Over his nine-year NBA career, Miller played for the Suns, Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors, Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento Kings, and Minnesota Timberwolves, averaging 7.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game.

The Toronto Raptors, who selected Miller as the last pick in the expansion draft in 1995, honored him with a moment of silence before their game against the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday. The team expressed their condolences on social media, stating, “He holds a special place in our history as a member of our inaugural team in 1995, and we are so grateful for all his contributions. We send our deepest condolences to the Miller family.”

In a social media post, Suns broadcaster Eddie Johnson shared his grief, stating, “I am so sad to report we have lost another @NBA fraternity member! Nine-year veteran Oliver Miller has passed away at age 54! Going to miss you, Big O. RIP.” The basketball community has largely rallied around Miller’s family and friends following the news of his passing, with many expressing their heartfelt memories and condolences.
