Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen secured an emphatic 4-1 victory over Hoffenheim on Saturday, highlighted by a standout performance from Victor Boniface. The Nigerian forward contributed significantly to the win by scoring two goals and providing one assist, marking Leverkusen’s return to form following the international break.

The match commenced with Leverkusen taking a commanding lead within the first 30 minutes. Boniface initiated the scoring by assisting Martin Terrier for an easy goal in the 17th minute. Shortly thereafter, Boniface found the back of the net himself, doubling the visitors’ advantage with a composed finish.

Hoffenheim’s Mergim Berisha, making his first appearance since a knee ligament injury, managed to narrow the gap just before halftime by converting a close-range opportunity. However, Leverkusen reinstated their two-goal cushion in the 72nd minute when Florian Wirtz successfully converted a penalty following a foul by Dennis Geiger on Alex Grimaldo.

In a display of athleticism, Boniface sealed the victory three minutes later with a remarkable run and powerful shot that left Hoffenheim’s goalkeeper, Oliver Baumann, unable to respond. This victory elevates Leverkusen to fourth place in the league standings with six points.

Notably, this win marks Leverkusen’s first successful two away game start in a Bundesliga season and maintains their impressive 19-match unbeaten streak away from home. Before the international break, RB Leipzig had ended Leverkusen’s 35-game unbeaten run, but Xabi Alonso‘s team has rebounded effectively.

The match was also significant for Oliver Baumann, who equaled Toni Schumacher and Lothar Matthaus with his 464th Bundesliga appearance. This was his 92nd consecutive game in the league competition.
