Bayern Munich Faces Injury Challenges Ahead of Critical Matches

MUNICH, Germany — Bayern Munich is gearing up for a crucial week as they strive to regain the Bundesliga title while navigating significant injury setbacks. Coach Vincent Kompany reinforced the team’s commitment to maintain momentum ahead of their match against FC Augsburg on Saturday and the subsequent Champions League quarterfinal against Inter Milan.
With 65 points from 27 matches, Bayern holds a six-point lead over defending champions Bayer Leverkusen. However, their performance has dipped with only one win in their last three Bundesliga outings, including a loss to Bochum and a draw against Union Berlin.
“We have a few options for the full-back position. You can also get creative,” Kompany said regarding the injuries affecting the squad. “The important thing is that we have confidence and that doesn’t change the fact that we have to go full throttle. We want to win.”
Injuries to key players, including left-back Alphonso Davies and center-back Dayot Upamecano, have left the squad vulnerable. Davies is expected to miss the rest of the season, and Upamecano’s situation remains uncertain. Defender Hiroki Ito also suffered a metatarsal fracture last week.
Despite these challenges, Kompany remains optimistic about the squad’s potential to conquer future matches. “During the international break, we had time to look ahead, but then we had three fresh injuries,” he explained. “What I want is for the lads to stay fit, and then we will get the results.”
According to the Opta supercomputer, Bayern has a 95% chance of securing the Bundesliga title, in stark contrast to Leverkusen’s 5% probability. Kompany mentioned that Sacha Boey, a recent addition to the squad from Galatasaray, could help fill the gap in the defense.
“Sacha is a player who loves playing on the right. He’s fit and definitely an option, and he’ll get his minutes in the coming weeks,” he stated. “We have six players who have regularly played at full-back. It’s important that they stay fit.”
The Bavarians’ season statistics indicate a promising trajectory, having gathered more points than at this stage in previous campaigns since 2017-18. However, the team’s defensive struggles have surfaced, with the same number of goals conceded in the second half of the season as the entire first half — 13 goals.
Bayern is now confronting the possibility of achieving five consecutive league games without a clean sheet for the first time under Kompany’s management. On the other hand, Augsburg remains a formidable opponent, currently unbeaten in 11 Bundesliga matches and having conceded only four league goals in 2025, the fewest among Europe’s top five leagues.
After facing Augsburg, Bayern will shift focus to their Champions League quarterfinal match against Serie A leaders Inter Milan, which adds further pressure to the team.
