Bayern Munich’s Rising Star: Lennart Karl Shines After Wirtz Transfer Falls Through
MUNICH, Germany — Bayern Munich is celebrating the unexpected rise of 17-year-old Lennart Karl, who has stepped up this season following the failed transfer of Florian Wirtz. Club executives, including Uli Hoeneß, had aimed to sign Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and even discussed jersey numbers. However, after Wirtz chose Liverpool, Bayern turned to Karl, who has since proven himself as a valuable player.
This season, Karl participated in 14 out of 18 matches, racking up 5 goal contributions, surpassing Wirtz’s 3 in 16 appearances for Liverpool. His performance has caught the eye of coach Vincent Kompany and Bayern’s sporting director, Max Eberl, who extended Karl’s contract early in the season.
As he approaches his 18th birthday on February 22, Karl is expected to transition from his youth contract to a professional deal that will run until 2029. Internally, Bayern is discussing various “multi-scenarios,” adjusting salary structures based on game performances.
“I just try to give it my all,” Karl said when asked about his chances for the German national team. He is eager to impress coach Julian Nagelsmann and believes he has what it takes for a spot on the World Cup roster in summer 2026.
Former German international Lothar Matthäus praised Karl’s potential, insisting he deserves a spot on the national team. “He has the right environment at Bayern and has already achieved significant milestones with his dribbling and self-confidence,” Matthäus stated.
Matthäus emphasized the importance of promoting young players, arguing that Germany has a tendency to hesitate in giving them opportunities. “Let them go, there are no arguments against nominating Karl,” he added. With the competition heating up, established players like Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sané could find themselves at risk if Karl maintains his form.
As Bayern prepares for their Champions League match against Arsenal on Wednesday, questions arise about adjustments the team may need to make. The combination of Musiala, Olise, and Karl could form a dynamic offensive trio, showcasing the club’s depth.
For now, Karl must consistently perform at a high level to validate his inclusion in upcoming matches and potential World Cup selection. “He is a strong candidate because players with unique talent are invaluable in such tournaments,” Matthäus concluded.
