Long-time BBC news anchor Huw Edwards has officially resigned from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) following advice from his medical professionals. This decision comes after Edwards had been on a hiatus from his broadcasting duties since July last year, amidst allegations of inappropriate behavior.

The BBC, in a brief statement, confirmed the news of Edwards’ resignation and departure, stating that after a remarkable 40-year career with the broadcaster, his decision to leave was based on medical counsel from his doctors. The corporation acknowledged his resignation and believes this step will enable all parties involved to move forward. No further comments were provided by the BBC on this matter.

Edwards, a prominent figure on BBC News, had been suspended last year amid reports that he had engaged in financial transactions with a younger individual in exchange for explicit images. His suspension followed a series of allegations, including claims of inappropriate behavior towards staff.

Earlier in the year, reports surfaced suggesting that even during his suspension, Edwards was expected to retain his position as the highest-paid newsreader at the BBC in the upcoming financial accounts. Despite being off the air for an extended period, the corporation confirmed that Edwards did not receive any severance pay upon his departure.

Vicky Flind, Edwards’ wife, had previously disclosed that her husband was grappling with severe mental health issues, leading to his hospitalization. The controversy surrounding Edwards escalated after reports emerged implicating him, leading to public scrutiny and investigations into the allegations.

The BBC faced criticism for its handling of the initial complaint made by the parents of the young individual involved, which was reportedly made known to the corporation in May last year but was not promptly addressed. Subsequent investigations found no criminal wrongdoing by Edwards.

In response to the outcry, the BBC initiated a review of its internal complaints procedures, conducted by Deloitte partner Simon Cuerden. The review highlighted the need for enhanced consistency within the organization when addressing serious complaints, aiming to prevent similar oversights in the future.

Edwards, known for his pivotal role in covering major political and royal events, including the announcement of Queen Elizabeth II‘s passing, had been a fixture in BBC’s journalism for over four decades. His resignation marks the end of an illustrious career within the organization.

Throughout his tenure, Edwards has played a significant role in political reporting, most notably taking over election coverage from veteran BBC presenter David Dimbleby. His departure leaves a notable void in the BBC’s news programming.
