BCCI Consider Former New Zealand Captain Stephen Fleming as Potential Successor to Rahul Dravid for Indian Men’s Team Coach Position
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contemplating the appointment of Stephen Fleming, the former New Zealand captain and current Chennai Super Kings head coach, as a potential successor to Rahul Dravid in coaching the Indian men’s team across all formats.
Amid upcoming changes within the Indian cricket team, including a transition phase, the BCCI sees Fleming’s managerial abilities, player motivation skills, and successful track record with CSK as key assets for the national team.
The informal discussions regarding Fleming’s consideration have begun within the BCCI since the T20 World Cup. However, Fleming has not indicated any intention to depart from CSK, where he has been the head coach since 2009.
Having coached various T20 teams globally, including Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash league, Joburg Super Kings, and Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket, as well as Southern Brave in The Hundred, Fleming has established himself as a successful and versatile coach.
Fleming’s extensive contributions to the CSK franchise, leading them to multiple IPL titles and Champions League trophies, have garnered respect and admiration within the BCCI for his leadership capabilities and player development strategies.
Indian senior players reportedly prefer a coach with Fleming’s expertise and strategic insights to support the younger generation set to shape the team’s core in the coming years.
If Fleming declines, the BCCI’s next move remains uncertain, as other foreign coaches associated with IPL have reservations due to the demanding schedule of the Indian coaching role.
Rahul Dravid, whose current contract ends after the T20 World Cup, can reapply for the position if he wishes to continue leading the Indian men’s team.
