Bear Bachmeier Transfers to BYU from Stanford

PROVO, Utah – Stanford quarterback Bear Bachmeier has officially committed to BYU, as reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Saturday morning. The talented dual-threat quarterback made the decision following a visit to BYU’s campus earlier in the week.
Bachmeier, a standout high school quarterback who was rated as a four-star prospect by several recruiting services, entered the transfer portal after Stanford’s head coach Troy Taylor was fired in March. He had originally signed with Stanford as part of the 2025 recruiting class, holding offers from prominent programs such as Georgia and Alabama.
‘The ability to come in and win games and OC Aaron Roderick’s scheme is enticing,’ Bachmeier said. He aims to establish himself as a key player for the Cougars, possibly taking over as the starting quarterback in 2026 after current quarterback Jake Retzlaff graduates.
Bachmeier, who is 6-foot-2 and weighs 225 pounds, is recognized for his agility and strong arm, making him a well-rounded quarterback. ‘He can beat a defense with his arm or his legs,’ Thamel reported, citing his impressive high school performance.
The 2025 season will see Bachmeier compete for the backup quarterback position against McCae Hillstead and Treyson Bourguet. Should he redshirt in 2025, Bachmeier would have four years of eligibility starting in 2026, positioning him well for success in BYU’s offense, which is known for developing effective quarterbacks.
In addition to Bear, his brother Tiger Bachmeier, a wide receiver who also transferred from Stanford, is expected to make a decision soon. The siblings have expressed a desire to play together, adding excitement to their potential collaboration at BYU.
