CHICAGO, Ill. — The Chicago Bears are wrestling with a critical decision regarding All-Pro guard Joe Thuney. Acquired in a trade, Thuney could significantly enhance the Bears’ offensive line. However, his age raises questions about the sustainability of his performance in the coming years.

Thuney, now 32, has enjoyed a successful career, playing nine NFL seasons with only two games missed due to injury. He has started 167 regular-season games and has played in 21 playoff games. His impressive track record suggests he may deserve a contract reminiscent of the five-year, $80 million deal he secured before the 2021 season.

Yet, age is a critical factor in the NFL. Few guards manage to perform well into their mid-30s. Notably, six guards have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame since 1985, with most of them retiring by the age of 34. Comparatively, Zack Martin, another standout guard, is facing retirement this season at 35 despite a similar injury history to Thuney.

Only three active guards have contracts inked past their 30th birthdays, with Graham Glasgow leading the trio at a three-year, $20 million deal. Contracts for older guards are seldom long-term, further complicating Thuney’s situation.

In contrast, the potential to extend Thuney’s contract before training camp remains high, although the length of such a deal could be contentious. Should Thuney test free agency next year as a 33-year-old, it could significantly impact the Bears’ plans.

General Manager Ryan Poles is also pondering a potential future contract for quarterback Caleb Williams, who could command over $50 million starting in 2027. This financial landscape could influence how the Bears approach Thuney’s contract negotiations.

Compounding this decision is the presence of new teammate Jonah Jackson, who is younger and under contract through 2027. Jackson, an immediate starter since being drafted in the third round of 2020, may be a cornerstone the Bears choose to build around.

Thuney is set to participate in this week’s voluntary OTAs at Halas Hall. It will be interesting to see how Head Coach Ben Johnson and GM Poles approach the looming contract situation.
