Beau Atkinson Joins Ohio State After Transferring from North Carolina

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State University bolstered its defensive line Wednesday by adding former North Carolina defensive end Beau Atkinson, who committed to the Buckeyes through the spring transfer portal.
Atkinson, a 6-foot-6, 265-pound defensive end from Raleigh, North Carolina, chose Ohio State over other top programs, including Georgia and South Carolina. He made his decision shortly after visiting the Columbus campus on Monday.
After redshirting in 2022, Atkinson had an impressive two seasons with the Tar Heels, recording 54 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, and 11 sacks. Last year alone, he contributed 35 tackles and 7.5 sacks, demonstrating his ability as a disruptive defensive force.
“I’m excited for the opportunity at Ohio State. I believe it’s the right fit for my skills and career development,” Atkinson said in a statement.
Atkinson’s addition comes at a critical time for the Buckeyes, who lost all four of their starting defensive linemen this offseason. He will compete for a starting position alongside Caden Curry and Kenyatta Jackson Jr. and is expected to make an immediate impact.
With an overall grade of 77 last year, Atkinson’s performance was noted for exceeding expectations. He recorded a solid 74.3 in run defense and 76.2 in pass rushing, showcasing his dual-threat capability on the field.
In addition to Atkinson, the Buckeyes are looking for further reinforcements along the defensive line, as they are eager to strengthen their roster with key players. Another transfer prospect, Troy Pikes, is scheduled to visit Ohio State soon.
As Ohio State gears up for the 2025 season, Atkinson’s commitment marks an essential step in rebuilding their defensive unit, crucial for maintaining competitiveness in college football.
