Becky Sauerbrunn’s Legacy Celebrated as USWNT Faces Jamaica

ST. LOUIS, Missouri — Becky Sauerbrunn, a legendary defender for the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT), will be honored in her hometown on June 3 before the team takes on Jamaica. The ceremony marks the culmination of Sauerbrunn’s impressive 16-year career with the USWNT, which includes two FIFA Women’s World Cup victories and an Olympic gold medal in 2012.
Growing up in St. Louis, often referred to as ‘Soccer City, USA,’ Sauerbrunn was immersed in a culture of soccer from a young age. She learned the game by attending local matches and became deeply inspired by the stories of the sport’s history in the city.
‘Soccer was kind of all around,’ Sauerbrunn said in an interview. ‘I just felt really fortunate because it helped me grow my love and passion for the game.’
Before the match against Jamaica, Sauerbrunn will receive recognition for her contributions to the sport. The USWNT head coach, Emma Hayes, praised her impact on players and noted that even those who never played alongside her still feel her influence. ‘What would Becky do?’ is a common question among team members, showing her enduring legacy.
Sauerbrunn’s career is notable for her defensive prowess, earning her 219 caps and playing every minute in both the 2015 and 2019 World Cup Finals. These achievements solidified her status as a role model.
This celebration comes as the USWNT prepares for its match at Energizer Park in St. Louis, where fans will not only witness exciting soccer but also receive a commemorative bobblehead honoring Sauerbrunn. She reflects fondly on her time with the team, emphasizing that the support from her hometown made her career feel even more special.
‘Anytime you can celebrate your career with the people that helped build that career with you, I think it’s pretty special,’ Sauerbrunn stated, looking forward to the event.
