Ex-Belgium Star Radja Nainggolan Arrested in Cocaine Trafficking Probe
BRUSSELS, Belgium — Former Belgian national team midfielder Radja Nainggolan was arrested Monday in connection with a major cocaine trafficking investigation, authorities confirmed. The 36-year-old footballer, who recently came out of retirement to join Belgian second-division club Lokeren-Temse, is among several suspects detained in a series of raids across the country.
The Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office stated that the investigation focuses on the alleged importation of cocaine from South America to Europe through the Port of Antwerp, followed by its redistribution in Belgium. Authorities conducted 30 house searches as part of the operation, though Nainggolan was not explicitly named in the official statement due to Belgian legal practices.
Nainggolan’s club confirmed his absence from training Monday morning but emphasized the presumption of innocence. “We respect the legal process and will not comment further at this time,” a club spokesperson said. The arrest comes just six days after Nainggolan scored on his debut for Lokeren-Temse in a 1-1 draw against K. Lierse.
Born in Antwerp, Nainggolan enjoyed a successful career in Italy, playing for top clubs such as Roma and Inter Milan. He earned 30 caps for the Belgian national team between 2009 and 2018. His arrest follows a similar case involving former Netherlands international Quincy Promes, who was sentenced to six years in prison last year for cocaine smuggling.
The investigation highlights the growing concern over drug trafficking through European ports, with Antwerp emerging as a key hub for illegal narcotics. Authorities have yet to release further details about Nainggolan’s alleged involvement or the scope of the trafficking network.
