The news of his passing was shared by his former colleague Alan Hahn in a post on social media platform X on February 24, 2025. No cause of death was specified, although reports indicated Trautwig had undergone treatment for cancer last year.
In a heartfelt tribute, Hahn expressed the profound impact Trautwig had on his career, stating, “We lost a legendary voice in sports. But we lost a lot more than that. He was not only a friend, but a mentor and a teacher.” Hahn highlighted Trautwig’s supportive role during his own early career.
During his distinguished career, Trautwig became a recognizable figure for sports fans in New York, calling games for the Yankees, Knicks, and a variety of other events. His tenure at MSG Network started in the 1980s, and he later expanded his reach as part of national broadcasts for NHL games and gymnastics at the Olympics.
Among Trautwig’s notable accomplishments was his appearance in the Disney film “Cool Runnings,” where he served as a sportscaster narrating the Jamaican bobsled team’s journey at the 1988 Calgary Olympics. This role solidified his status among national audiences who cherished his contributions to sports broadcasting.
Michael Kay, a Yankees television broadcaster, also paid tribute to Trautwig, stating on X, “I have been blessed to work with some amazing broadcasters but there was no one better than Al Trautwig. He was meant to be on the air. Smooth. Unflappable. Al patiently walked a young writer through growing pains on TV. His lessons were invaluable. He was part of the soundtrack of New York sports all those years on MSG. I will miss him. Gone too soon. RIP, my friend.”
As tributes continue to pour in on social media, fans and colleagues alike recall Trautwig’s engaging presence and sports acumen, celebrating a life dedicated to sports broadcasting.
