Ben Simmons May Seek Buyout from Nets to Join Contender
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Ben Simmons, the Brooklyn Nets forward, is reportedly considering approaching the team for a buyout to join a championship-contending squad, according to league sources. The Nets, currently in a rebuilding phase, have not engaged in buyout discussions with Simmons, but the situation could change if he initiates the conversation.
Simmons, 28, has struggled to regain his All-Star form since joining the Nets in a blockbuster trade in 2022. This season, he is averaging 6.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 7.1 assists in 31 games. His $40.3 million expiring contract makes a trade unlikely, but a buyout could provide mutual benefits for both Simmons and the Nets.
“There has been some talk amongst teams that Ben Simmons will approach the Brooklyn Nets for a buyout to join a playoff-contending team,” Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported. League sources confirmed the potential for such a move, though no formal discussions have taken place.
Brian Windhorst of ESPN also hinted at the possibility, noting that Simmons could be a buyout candidate for teams seeking a perimeter guard with size. “What you’d be looking for is a perimeter guard who has size. Two guys who could be bought out that fit that bill are Lonzo Ball and Ben Simmons,” Windhorst said.
For the Nets, a buyout could offer financial flexibility. Players are typically bought out at around 70% of their remaining contract, which would save Brooklyn several million dollars and help them avoid the luxury tax threshold. The team is currently just $677,000 below the tax line.
For Simmons, joining a contender could rejuvenate his career. Even in a limited role, contributing to a playoff team could improve his market value in free agency. However, any buyout would need to be finalized by March 1 to make him eligible for the postseason with a new team.
As the NBA trade deadline approaches on February 6, the Nets are expected to focus on acquiring future assets rather than making win-now moves. With four first-round picks and a high second-rounder in the 2025 draft, the team is positioned for a long-term rebuild. Meanwhile, Simmons’ future remains uncertain, with a potential buyout looming as the most likely scenario for his departure.
