Ben Simmons Basketball Signing Los Angeles Clippers

LOS ANGELES, California — The Los Angeles Clippers officially signed point guard Ben Simmons on February 11, shortly after the Brooklyn Nets waived him following a contract buyout. The Clippers did not disclose the terms of Simmons’ agreement.

Simmons, 28, was in the final year of a five-year, $177.2 million contract, which included a $40.3 million salary this season. He faced a challenging stint with the Nets, plagued by injuries and inconsistent performance over three seasons, averaging only 6.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 6.3 assists in 90 games.

Originally selected first overall in the 2016 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, Simmons was traded to Brooklyn as part of a blockbuster deal that sent James Harden to Philadelphia on February 10, 2022. His tenure with the Nets has been marked by a series of setbacks, including missing an entire season due to focusing on his mental health and dealing with back injuries.

In his brief time with the Nets, Simmons played just 33 games this season, producing averages of 6.2 points, 6.9 assists, and 5.2 rebounds per game. Comparatively, during his earlier years with the 76ers, Simmons posted averages of 15.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.7 assists in 275 games.

The Clippers, currently positioned seventh in the Western Conference with a 28-23 record, have expressed a desire to maximize their playoff chances by enhancing their roster. Simmons’ signing follows several key trades aimed at boosting team depth, including the acquisition of Bogdan Bogdanović.

Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue noted the need for versatile players like Simmons, particularly in light of the team’s struggles with ball protection and overall depth. “Ben has the size and skills to guard multiple positions and can fill various roles for us,” Lue said.

Simmons’ arrival is anticipated to bolster the Clippers’ defense and provide additional ball-handling capabilities, essential for facilitating plays alongside stars like James Harden and Kawhi Leonard. While there are concerns about his shooting—having made very few attempts from deep—his defensive track record and playmaking potential could help solidify the Clippers as strong contenders heading into the playoffs.

According to sources, Simmons is looking for stability and a chance to compete, which aligns with the Clippers’ playoff ambitions. As the season progresses, the synergy between Simmons and the existing roster will be crucial in determining the impact of his signing. He is expected to wear his college number, 25, with his new team.
