Benfica and Barcelona Clash in Crucial Champions League Match
LISBON, Portugal — Benfica and FC Barcelona face off tonight in a pivotal Champions League match at the Estadio Da Luz, with both teams vying for crucial points to secure their positions in the tournament. Benfica aims to mathematically clinch their spot in the next round, while Barcelona seeks to finish among the top eight for a more favorable draw in the knockout stages.
The match marks Barcelona’s return to a stadium that has been unkind in recent years, including a 3-0 loss to Benfica and an 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich. The Catalan club hopes to leave past disappointments behind and continue their strong start to 2025, following a recent victory at the Coliseum.
Two Benfica players, Álvaro Carreras and Florentino Luis, will be under close scrutiny by Barcelona. Both were previously linked with the Spanish club, with Carreras, a Spanish left-back, drawing attention since his move from Manchester United last summer. Portuguese midfielder Florentino Luis was also a target in 2023, though financial constraints complicated any potential deal.
Ángel Di María, another Benfica star, was praised by Barcelona coach Hansi Flick in the pre-match press conference. Despite being deemed too old for a move to Barcelona after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, Di María remains a key figure for Benfica.
Barcelona’s lineup features a strong attacking trio of Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and Lamine Yamal. The first half saw intense action, with Benfica taking an early lead through Pavlidis, only for Lewandowski to equalize from the penalty spot after a foul on Alejandro Balde.
Barcelona’s scouting team is reportedly monitoring several players, including Leverkusen‘s Tah and Wirtz, as well as Benfica’s Álvaro Carreras. The 21-year-old left-back, valued at 18 million euros, is being considered as a potential backup for Balde. Carreras has impressed tonight, providing an assist and nearly setting up a second goal.
Flick has emphasized the need to strengthen both full-back positions, and Carreras’ performance tonight has only heightened Barcelona’s interest. While no formal offer has been made, Deco, Barcelona’s sporting director, is reportedly working on a deal to bring the young Spaniard to Camp Nou.
