Bengals Draft Linebacker Barrett Carter from Clemson in Fourth Round

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Cincinnati Bengals selected linebacker Barrett Carter from Clemson with the 119th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft on April 26. At 6 feet tall and 231 pounds, Carter is expected to contribute significantly to the Bengals’ defense.
Carter, who has been described as a versatile player, recorded an impressive 82 tackles, including 3.5 sacks, during his senior season with the Tigers. His defensive skills earned him third-team All-American honors from the Associated Press and Phil Steele in 2024. He is known for his leadership on the field, having served as a team captain and graduated from Clemson.
Defensive coordinator Al Golden praised Carter’s football intelligence and adaptability, stating, “He’s a cultural creator. He’ll help ours.” Carter’s ability to play on special teams and as a core linebacker makes him a valuable asset as the Bengals transition their defense.
After being drafted, Carter expressed excitement about joining the Bengals, emphasizing his readiness to contribute anywhere on the field, saying, “I love defense … I’ve been playing special teams my whole college career and ready just to play anywhere.”
Bengals general manager Duke Tobin highlighted Carter’s instincts and his success at Clemson. “He can play around or off the block and has agility and quickness for sudden adjustments,” he explained, emphasizing Carter’s potential to become a reliable NFL starter.
Carter’s journey in football began in high school, where he initially played as a running back and wide receiver before switching to linebacker. Reflecting on that change, Carter said, “I was super mad about it… But the next day, I got my first scholarship offer. God works in mysterious ways.”
The Bengals have made clear their intent to bolster their linebacker unit, also drafting Demetrius Knight Jr. earlier in the draft. The addition of Carter signals a proactive approach in reshaping their defensive strategy.
