Bengals Eye Former Bears Coach Matt Eberflus for Defensive Coordinator Role
CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Cincinnati Bengals are reportedly considering former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus for their vacant defensive coordinator position. Eberflus, who was fired by the Bears on Nov. 29, 2024, is now a key candidate in the Bengals’ search to replace Lou Anarumo, who was dismissed earlier this week.
According to ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler, Eberflus is “involved” in the Bengals’ defensive coordinator search. Fowler noted that multiple NFL teams are also interested in Eberflus, who previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 to 2021. During his tenure with the Colts, Eberflus’ defenses consistently ranked among the league’s best in key categories.
Under Eberflus, the Colts’ defense was the only NFL unit to rank in the top 10 in scoring, run defense, and takeaways in both the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Additionally, Indianapolis finished in the top 10 in run defense and takeaways in all four seasons under Eberflus, while also ranking among the least penalized defenses in 2019 and 2021.
Eberflus’ potential hiring would mark a significant shift for the Bengals, whose defense, led by Anarumo, showed flashes of brilliance during the 2021 and 2022 postseasons but struggled with consistency in the regular season. The Bengals have already interviewed several candidates, including former Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.
Bengals fans and analysts have expressed mixed reactions to the possibility of Eberflus joining the team. While his tenure as a head coach in Chicago was widely criticized, his track record as a defensive coordinator has earned him respect across the league. If hired, Eberflus would bring a proven system and a wealth of experience to Cincinnati’s defense.
The Bengals’ search for a new defensive coordinator comes at a critical juncture as the team looks to rebuild its defense and return to playoff contention in 2025. The decision could have long-term implications for the franchise, which has struggled to maintain defensive consistency in recent years.
