Bengals Eye Al Golden, Patrick Graham for Defensive Coordinator Role
CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Cincinnati Bengals are closing in on hiring their next defensive coordinator, with Notre Dame‘s Al Golden and former Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham emerging as top candidates, according to reports.
Golden, who served as the Bengals’ linebackers coach from 2021 to 2022 under Head Coach Zac Taylor, is currently Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator. During a pregame press conference on Saturday, Golden acknowledged receiving inquiries about a potential return to the NFL but emphasized his focus on his current role. “It’s humbling that your name is mentioned, because of team success or the success of our defense,” Golden said. “This is not the time or place. This is about the kids. That’s our focus. All of that other stuff we’ll deal with in the future.”
Patrick Graham, who recently interviewed with the Jacksonville Jaguars for their head coaching vacancy, is also in the mix for the Bengals’ defensive coordinator position. Graham’s contract with the Raiders has expired, allowing him to pursue opportunities elsewhere. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Graham is scheduled to interview with the Bengals for the role.
Meanwhile, star pass rusher T.J. Watt of the Pittsburgh Steelers reflected on a challenging 2024 season, during which he recorded 11.5 sacks, his lowest total since his rookie year. Watt, who lined up on the left side of the defense 94.7% of the time, expressed openness to moving around more in 2025 to disrupt opposing offenses. “Teams are playing certain ways with chips and helps and stuff like that and getting the ball out quick,” Watt said. “I need to be more open to moving around more and trying to affect games as much as possible.”
In other coaching news, the Cleveland Browns promoted Tommy Rees from Tight Ends Coach/Pass Game Specialist to Offensive Coordinator. Head Coach Kevin Stefanski praised Rees for his contributions during a season marked by injuries and uncertainty. “Tommy has an incredible football mind,” Stefanski said. “He is extremely bright and has been around the game his entire life.”
The Bengals, who narrowly missed the playoffs after a five-game win streak to close the 2024 season, are expected to make significant roster changes this offseason. With key defensive players like Trey Hendrickson, Sam Hubbard, and Joseph Ossai facing uncertain futures, the team is prioritizing improvements to its defensive front.
