Cincinnati Bengals Alex Cappa Release News

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Cincinnati Bengals announced on March 3 that they have released guard Alex Cappa, a significant move that clears $8 million in cap space for the team.

Cappa, who will enter his eighth NFL season in 2025, joined the Bengals as an unrestricted free agent prior to the 2022 season. Over his three seasons with Cincinnati, he started all 50 regular-season games he participated in, primarily playing the right guard position.

This decision comes as the Bengals look to increase their financial flexibility heading into the offseason. The team’s move is particularly notable given that the 30-year-old’s contract included no guaranteed salary for 2025. Consequently, releasing him aligns with the franchise’s cost-cutting measures ahead of the NFL Draft, as they target upgrades on the offensive line.

<p“By releasing Alex, we not only create cap space but also open the door to consider new options for our interior line,” a Bengals' spokesperson stated. “Our goal is to ensure our team remains competitive and championship-ready.”

In 2024, Cappa played all offensive snaps for the Bengals, contributing to their offensive game plan but faced challenges in performance metrics. According to Pro Football Focus, he ranked 71st among 77 eligible guards, with a poor overall grade of 50.5, marking the lowest of his career. Compounding matters, he was rated 72nd in pass blocking, earning a score of 39.7, though his run blocking was slightly more favorable at 54.9.

As the Bengals currently sit with over $69 million in cap space, they are preparing for significant roster decisions. With this newfound flexibility, management is poised to address potential re-signings and secure key players as they move closer to the NFL Draft.

“We are optimistic about our position this offseason,” said Bengals General Manager Duke Tobin. “We have high expectations and believe we have a championship-caliber team. The focus remains to retain our core players while evaluating new talent to strengthen our roster.”

In light of Cappa’s departure, attention will now shift to the upcoming draft as the Bengals seek to bolster their offensive line. Analysts note that both guard positions are likely targets when Cincinnati makes its selections.
