Cincinnati Bengals T.j. Slaton Defensive Tackle

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Bengals are beefing up their defensive line by signing former Green Bay Packers defensive tackle T.J. Slaton to a two-year, $15.1 million contract, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero. The announcement was made on March 10, 2025, shortly after the Bengals secured a three-year extension with defensive tackle B.J. Hill.

Slaton, 27, was drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft and has proven himself durable, participating in all 68 games since joining the NFL. Over his career, he has accumulated 134 tackles and two sacks, becoming a recognizable figure for his exceptional run-stopping capabilities. In fact, ESPN ranked him as the top interior run stopper for the previous season.

Throughout his four seasons with the Packers, Slaton has established himself as a core player, starting 17 games over the last two seasons. He has particularly shone in his role, contributing significantly to a defensive unit that ranked seventh in the league against the run in 2024. This was evidenced by his overall performance, where he amassed 80 total tackles, including 38 solo stops since becoming a starter.

“T.J. brings the size and experience we need in the middle of our defensive line,” said Bengals head coach Zac Taylor. “His familiarity with Coach Jerry Montgomery from their time together in Green Bay will make for a smooth transition.”

Slaton’s dimensions of 6-foot-4 and 330 pounds add vital mass to the Bengals’ defensive front, which aims to improve its performance after a challenging 2024 season where they struggled against the run. The signing represents more than just a new face; it reflects a strategic decision to address the interior defense effectively.

As Cincinnati prepares for the upcoming season, the team’s defensive line remains in a state of flux. Hill’s new extension solidifies one position, but with Sam Hubbard retiring and Trey Hendrickson seeking a trade, there are still significant holes to fill.

Slaton’s expertise as a nose tackle is expected to play a pivotal role in stabilizing the defensive strategy, particularly for a team that has faced challenges in stopping the run effectively. With the offseason roster changes underway, fans can anticipate a renewed focus on solidifying the defensive unit.

Additionally, the Bengals are reportedly in discussions with free agent pass rusher Joseph Ossai for a potential return. In another move, running back Samaje Perine is coming back on a two-year deal valued at up to $3.8 million, further reinforcing the team’s depth.

As the free agency period unfolds, the Bengals are actively working to enhance their roster in preparation for the 2025 season. Their commitment to strengthening the defensive line with the addition of Slaton is a clear indication of their drive for improvement.
