Bengals Re-Sign Defensive Tackle B.J. Hill to $33 Million Deal

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Cincinnati Bengals have re-signed defensive tackle B.J. Hill to a three-year, $33 million contract, which includes $16 million guaranteed, multiple sources report. The agreement comes just ahead of the NFL‘s free agency opening on Monday.
Hill, 29, initially joined the Bengals in a trade from the New York Giants before the start of the 2021 season. His performance has notably improved over his tenure, having started 50 of 64 games during his time with Cincinnati. In his last three seasons with the team, he recorded 16 sacks and 53 quarterback hits.
Despite the Bengals’ struggles on defense last season, Hill’s individual statistics remained impressive. He ranked ninth among interior defenders in run stop win rate at 37%, according to ESPN’s Next Gen Stats. Over the last season, Hill accrued three sacks and made 56 combined tackles, along with seven tackles for loss and nine quarterback hits.
“He’s a key part of our defense,” Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said. “We value his presence in the locker room and on the field. He brings a veteran leadership that is crucial for our team moving forward.”
Hill’s contract extension comes as the Bengals aim to bolster their defense this offseason. While they have not made any notable additions yet, keeping Hill is seen as a step in the right direction for the team’s defensive stability.
In a statement, Hill expressed excitement about continuing his career in Cincinnati. “I’m thrilled to be back with the Bengals and to continue building something special in this organization,” he said.
The Bengals previously traded for Hill as part of a deal involving former first-round pick Billy Price. Since then, Hill has not only been a contributor during the regular season but also made an impact during the Bengals’ playoff runs in 2021 and 2022.
The decision to re-sign Hill also reflects the team’s focus on continuity, as he will be working under the same coaching system for the first time in his career this coming season. “Consistency is key for a defensive player’s development. I’m ready to make the most of it,” Hill added.
As the Bengals ramp up preparations for the upcoming season, the return of Hill could prove pivotal in enhancing their defensive lineup, especially after their disappointing season where defense was highlighted as a significant weakness.
