Bianca Andreescu kicked off her Olympic journey with a fantastic victory over Clara Tauson, who ranks 63rd in the world, at the tennis tournament in Paris on Sunday. The match took place at the famous Rolland-Garros venue.

The 24-year-old from Mississauga had to reschedule her match, which was originally set for the day before. In a strong showing, she dominated her opponent, winning 6-2 and 6-3 in just 1 hour and 45 minutes.

“There are no words to describe this. It was truly amazing. I think I played really well from start to finish, which was obviously the goal,” Andreescu shared with Radio-Canada. She also appreciated the support from the crowd, noting how many Canadians were present and the great atmosphere.

Andreescu, who was the 2019 U.S. Open champion, is making her Olympic debut after missing the Tokyo Games. Currently, she holds the 171st spot in the WTA rankings.

On the same day, Leylah Annie Fernandez is set to play against Czech player Karolina Muchova, who was a finalist at the 2023 Roland-Garros. Fernandez will also compete in doubles alongside Gabriela Dabrowski, the world’s 3rd-ranked doubles player, taking on the French duo of Clara Burel and Varvara Gracheva.
