Bill’s Linebacker Duo Faces Key Offseason Challenges

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills enter the 2025 offseason with critical decisions regarding their linebacker duo, Matt Milano and Terrel Bernard. Known as one of the strongest pairings in the NFL, their performance is pivotal for the team’s overall success. Milano, a former All-Pro, missed a significant portion of the 2023 season due to an ACL tear, returning for just four regular-season games. As he gears up for the 2024 season at age 31, his durability will be crucial. “The best ability is availability,” Bills head coach Sean McDermott remarked, highlighting the necessity of having both linebackers healthy.

Bernard, who took over the middle linebacker position after Termaine Edmunds’ departure, has quickly made an impact, earning captain status in 2024. Despite dealing with his own injury issues last season, he missed only four games and is expected to be a significant contributor next year. “Bernard has stepped up and showcased leadership. He’s crucial for our defense,” McDermott added.

Unfortunately, both linebackers were not on the field together as often as the Bills desired. In Milano’s absence, Dorian Williams filled in admirably, although he occasionally struggled with overpursuit on plays. Williams is seen as a solid depth piece but lacks the experience of Milano or Bernard.

Other reserves, including Joe Andreessen, Baylon Spector, and Edefuan Ulofoshio, saw playing time. Andreessen’s impressive work ethic earned him a place on the roster, and he was a notable contributor on special teams. However, the Bills hope to bolster their linebacker depth through the offseason.

With both Milano and Bernard being crucial in various defensive roles, their injury concerns present a ripple effect on the entire defensive squad. Milano’s potential for another major injury raises questions about his long-term viability with the team. Consequently, the Bills may seek depth in the upcoming draft, although the linebacker position is not a top priority compared to other pressing needs like edge rusher and cornerback.

Milano’s age and injury history could influence the Bills’ draft strategy, especially if a player is perceived to be a long-term replacement. General manager Brandon Beane faces a pivotal offseason, needing to balance building for the future while also competing in the present.
