Billion Dollar Donation Makes New York’s Albert Einstein Medical School Tuition-Free
A 93-year-old philanthropist, Ruth Gottesman, has made a historic $1 billion donation to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, aiming to eliminate all tuition fees for future students at the prestigious institution.
The announcement was made in a joyous event at the college where students erupted into cheers upon hearing the news that their tuition will now be covered starting from August, thanks to the generosity of Gottesman.
The Albert Einstein College of Medicine, located in the Bronx, one of New York’s poorest boroughs, will now offer tuition-free education to its medical students, making it an unprecedented move in the US educational landscape.
Ruth Gottesman’s late husband, David Gottesman, a former Wall Street financier who was a close associate of Warren Buffett, left her a substantial fortune, which she decided to donate to the college in a groundbreaking gesture.
Dr. Yaron Yomer, the Dean of the medical school, described the donation as transformative, emphasizing the profound impact it will have on attracting a diverse pool of talented students who may have been deterred by the high cost of medical education.
The Gottesman Fund, operated by Ruth Gottesman and her family, has been dedicated to supporting various causes, including Jewish charities in Israel and the US, reflecting their commitment to philanthropy.
Notably, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine now joins New York University School of Medicine as one of the few tuition-free medical schools in the city, marking a significant step towards making medical education more accessible to all aspiring healthcare professionals.
