Billy Horschel Bmw Pga Championship

Billy Horschel made history on Sunday by becoming the first American to clinch the BMW PGA Championship twice, following a dramatic playoff victory over Rory McIlroy and Thriston Lawrence. The championship, hosted at the Wentworth Golf Club in Virginia Water, England, witnessed Horschel sink a stunning eagle putt on the second playoff hole to secure his victory, warmly embracing McIlroy afterwards.

“It’s always one of my most special weeks of the year,” Horschel exclaimed. “I enjoy coming here. I feel a sense of ease, I feel a sense of calm.” Horschel’s victory marked his second triumph at Wentworth, following his win three years prior.

Going into the final showdown, Horschel and McIlroy were trailing Matteo Manassero by three strokes but managed to score 5-under 67s, tying with Lawrence who had carded a remarkable 65. Manassero, however, slipped from the lead with a 1-over 73, notching four bogeys, which pushed him down to tie with Matthew Baldwin and Aaron Rai at 17 under.

The playoff commenced after the trio returned to the 18th hole. Lawrence fell behind with a bogey, while McIlroy and Horschel each achieved birdies, extending the contest to another playoff hole. Unfortunately for McIlroy, who has three runner-up finishes at Wentworth, Horschel clinched victory, displaying superior form on the day.

“It just shows the standard out here,” reflected McIlroy. “If you slip up just a little bit or don’t make a birdie on a crucial hole, someone is always waiting to take advantage of that.” Despite a challenging finish, McIlroy acknowledged his consistent form over the weekly competitions.

For Manassero, a win would have considerably improved his chances of qualifying for next year’s Ryder Cup and securing one of the PGA Tour cards available to European tour players each year.
