Birmingham Airport Evacuated Due to Suspicious Vehicle, Flights Grounded
Birmingham Airport was evacuated on Wednesday afternoon following a report of a suspicious vehicle, leading to the suspension of all airport operations and the grounding of flights. The evacuation, which is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of passengers and staff, was initiated after authorities received the report around 12:20 PM local time.
West Midlands Police are currently on-site dealing with the incident. A spokesperson for the police stated that the evacuation is a safety precaution to protect both passengers and staff.
Passengers due to fly from the airport were advised to contact their airlines for updates and were told not to attend the airport until further notice. The airport’s social media channels have been updating travelers on the situation, and Transport for West Midlands announced that its buses are not stopping at the airport during this time.
Those evacuated from the airport were relocated to the nearby National Exhibition Centre (NEC), which is on the other side of Birmingham International railway station from the airport. This is the second security-related incident at Birmingham Airport this year, following an evacuation in April due to a security issue on an aircraft.
The incident has caused significant disruptions, with flights delayed and passengers advised to check with their airlines for the latest information. The airport operations were expected to return to normal once the situation is resolved, but as of the latest updates, the airport remained closed to incoming travelers).
