PORTLAND, Oregon — Donovan Clingan, the 7-foot-2 center for the Portland Trail Blazers, is generating buzz for a potential breakout season ahead of the 2025-26 NBA campaign. His offseason dedication has not gone unnoticed, as teammates and coaches applaud his physical transformation and growth on the court.

Clingan, who earned NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors last year, has been described by teammate Kris Murray as a “safety net” for the team’s defense. Despite a rocky start to his rookie year, Clingan is now viewed as a crucial building block for the franchise.

“He looks completely different, in my opinion,” Murray said after a workout last week. “He’s moving really well. I think it was a big point of emphasis for him this offseason, and he’s done really well.” Over the summer, Clingan focused on improving his physique and basketball skills, eliminating weaknesses to cement his role as the starting center.

Coach Chauncey Billups expressed enthusiasm for Clingan’s development, noting how his improved fitness levels allow for greater endurance during practices and games. Clingan himself recalls an uncomfortable training camp experience last year, where he struggled to keep up with the pace. Fast forward to today, and he is able to compete for longer stretches, even indicating that he feels he can play continuously during practices.

Clingan’s transformation included shedding weight, reportedly dropping down to around 280 pounds while building muscle mass. This progress aligns with the goals set by Billups and the general manager during his exit interview last season.

“I just want to impact winning, man, do whatever it takes in as many ways as possible to win,” Clingan said. His performance last season showcased his defensive prowess, leading all rookies in blocks while averaging nearly 9 points and 10 rebounds.

This season, the Blazers have reassured Clingan of their confidence in him by allowing him to start following a contract buyout with former center DeAndre Ayton. Clingan aims to prove that the organization’s trust is well-placed.

As the Blazers prepare for their exhibition opener against the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday, all eyes will be on Clingan to see if he can turn his hard work into impactful performances on the court.
