Columbus Blue Jackets Outdoor Game Tribute

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ahead of their first-ever outdoor game, the Columbus Blue Jackets paid tribute to their late teammate Johnny Gaudreau by wearing his signature outfits. On Saturday, during the Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series against the Detroit Red Wings, the Blue Jackets’ players arrived at Ohio Stadium dressed in outfits reminiscent of Gaudreau’s distinct style, which he often wore off the ice.

The tribute was a heartfelt decision made during training camp when the players discussed how best to honor Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, who lost their lives in a tragic accident in August. Defenseman Zach Werenski stated, ‘We wanted to do something to honor John, and we thought no better way than to dress like him.’

The players donned black Ugg boots, black sweatpants, Avalon Surf Shop sweatshirts, and designer Amiri hats featuring three black stars. “If you knew John, you get it,” Werenski said, reflecting on the sense of comfort the outfits brought to the team.

To coordinate the tribute, team captain Boone Jenner reached out to Gaudreau’s widow, Meredith, for assistance. “She helped us a lot with pictures, trying to find his signature Johnny fit,” Jenner explained. The team acquired the sweatshirts from Avalon Surf Shop in New Jersey, while the hats were graciously donated by Amiri after the company learned of the tribute.

Meredith Gaudreau played a significant role in assembling the clothing for the team. “It’s very special to us. We wanted to make sure we put the right pieces in to honor him the right way, the whole fit,” Jenner shared. The outfits carry substantial personal meaning for the players, who have fond memories of Gaudreau embodying that same laid-back style during their time together.

The emotional aspect of the tribute was amplified as the Gaudreau family led the Blue Jackets players into the stadium, creating a powerful moment shared by fans and teammates alike. “It’s not just clothing; it’s about who he was as a person,” Werenski said. “It’s a great way to start our day here at the field.”

Meanwhile, in a show of camaraderie, players from the Red Wings also participated in honoring Gaudreau by wearing jerseys from throughout his career, including his Team USA jersey. Detroit captain Dylan Larkin noted the significance of this collaboration within the hockey community. “We all recognize the impact he had, and it’s important to show support,” Larkin said.

The anticipated game marked a pivotal moment not only for the Blue Jackets but also for the hockey community as it reflected a collective grieving process from the loss of two beloved figures. Fans and players shared a deep connection leading up to the game, and the arena’s atmosphere was charged with emotion.

“We’re going to play for him tonight like we have all year and honor him that way,” Jenner stated, encapsulating the spirit of unity that defined the events surrounding the commemorative game. The Blue Jackets and Red Wings faced off at 6:30 p.m. ET, and the significance of the night extended far beyond the game itself, serving as a testament to the lasting legacy of Johnny Gaudreau.
