Blue Jays Face Crucial Stretch After Recent Struggles

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Ejection Toronto Blue Jays

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays found themselves in a storm on Sunday night, just five hours after securing a postseason berth. The players sat on their plane, held captive by the turbulence outside, while they competed in trivia contests built into their seats.

After circling the airport to find a safe landing spot, they were forced to return to Detroit to refuel before finally arriving in Toronto well past midnight. Now, with just four games remaining in the regular season, the Blue Jays face another storm that could shake up their playoff plans.

A recent 7-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox added to their woes, leaving them tied in the American League East with the New York Yankees. The Blue Jays maintain the division lead due to a tiebreaker, but their margin has shrunk dramatically after losing six of their last seven games, during which they averaged only 1.85 runs.

Frustration has been evident among the team. Star player Vladimir Guerrero Jr. expressed his displeasure over a missed call, resulting in his second career ejection. Hitting coach David Popkins and player Myles Straw also voiced their discontent after disputes with the home-plate umpire.

“I know it feels like the sky is falling right now,” said manager John Schneider. “It’s not. We’ve got 90 wins and we’re in the playoffs.” Schneider emphasized the need for his players to stay confident despite recent challenges. He pointed out that missed calls have contributed to their struggles, but the team’s performance has also dipped significantly.

Notably, the absence of Bo Bichette, who is sidelined with a knee sprain, has impacted the offense. Once a powerhouse in scoring, Toronto’s offensive performance has dwindled, and the pitching rotation has been disrupted, with several key players dealing with injuries.

Despite recent setbacks, the Blue Jays still control their destiny. Winning their remaining games would secure them a trip to October with a potential bye and a strong postseason position.

“Tonight feels, the way we’ve been playing, feels like we’re on the bottom of the world,” said pitcher Max Scherzer. “But baseball can flip in a heartbeat.”

The Blue Jays don’t face a must-win situation for the remainder of the season; they will advance to the postseason regardless. However, how they finish will determine their momentum—pushing them toward becoming a rested division champion or a limping wild-card team.

“We’ve just gotta win games,” Guerrero Jr. stated. “We’ve gotta get back to where we were and start winning.”
