Blue Jays Reach Agreement With Infielder Escobar Pending Physical

The Toronto Blue Jays have reached an agreement with veteran infielder Escobar, pending a physical examination, as reported by MLB Network insider Jon Heyman. The deal adds depth to the Blue Jays’ infield as they look to bolster their roster for the upcoming season.

Escobar, a seasoned player at 35 years old, brings a wealth of experience to the Blue Jays. Throughout his 13-year Major League career, Escobar has proven to be a reliable hitter with above-average power. His career statistics reflect a solid performance, with a career slash line of .253/.305/.430 and 164 home runs.

However, Escobar faced challenges last season with stints at the Mets and Angels, struggling to find his rhythm at the plate. In 99 games and 309 plate appearances, he posted a .226 batting average with six home runs, prompting a search for a fresh start with the Blue Jays.

With uncertainties surrounding the future of third baseman Matt Chapman and second baseman Whit Merrifield in free agency, the Blue Jays have been proactive in fortifying their infield. The addition of Escobar, along with veteran third baseman Justin Turner and versatile infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, enhances the team’s depth and defensive options.
