Blue Jays Sign Cuban Pitcher Yariel Rodríguez In Multiyear Deal

The Toronto Blue Jays have made a significant move in this offseason by agreeing to a multiyear deal with Cuban right-hander Yariel Rodríguez. The deal has not been officially confirmed by the team but was first reported by MLB Network Insider Jon Morosi and later by Francys Romero.

Rodríguez, who hasn’t pitched competitively since the 2023 World Baseball Classic in March, emerged as one of the biggest mysteries in this market. With his experience pitching in Cuba and Japan, the 27-year-old brings considerable upside to the Blue Jays.

At the World Baseball Classic, Rodríguez made two starts for Cuba and showcased his talents with a 2.45 ERA, 10 strikeouts, and six walks over 7 1/3 innings. His impressive performance generated even more buzz about the right-hander.

While Rodríguez started his career as a starter in Cuba, he eventually transitioned to the bullpen in Japan. In 2022, as a full-time reliever for the Chunichi Dragons, he posted a remarkable 1.15 ERA with 60 strikeouts over 54 2/3 innings.

Given the Blue Jays’ roster construction, Rodríguez could potentially serve as a versatile swingman, capable of both starting and relieving. The team’s starting rotation features Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt, José Berríos, and Yusei Kikuchi, with Alek Manoah as the frontrunner for the fifth spot. However, the depth behind these pitchers is thin, making room for Rodríguez to contribute.

With his impressive fastball sitting at 96 mph and a deep repertoire, Rodríguez has the potential to establish himself in Toronto’s rotation. Additionally, the uncertain future of Yusei Kikuchi, who is entering his final year of club control, and the presence of top prospect Ricky Tiedemann in Triple-A, add further intrigue to Rodríguez’s role.

As the Blue Jays prepare for Spring Training in Dunedin, Florida, Rodríguez’s signing becomes one of the must-watch stories. With the camp just four weeks away, his return to competitive pitching and the development of his role will be closely monitored by fans and analysts alike.
