Sergei Bobrovsky Nhl Playoffs

EDMONTON, Canada — Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky is set to make his 60th consecutive postseason start when the Florida Panthers face the Edmonton Oilers in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final on Wednesday. Bobrovsky, 36, has been a key player for the Panthers this playoff season, helping them reach the finals for the third straight year.

Bobrovsky took over as the Panthers’ starting goalie late in the regular season when previous starter Sergei Lyon was injured. Instead of being discouraged by Lyon’s early playoff starts in 2023, Bobrovsky used the time to prepare himself for a future opportunity. “If I waste my time, that wouldn’t be smart,” Bobrovsky said during a media day on Tuesday.

His postseason success has been remarkable. Since starting Game 4 of the 2023 Eastern Conference First Round, Bobrovsky has a 40-19 record, with a 2.41 goals-against average, a .911 save percentage, and six shutouts. “Just a calming presence,” said Panthers forward Sam Reinhart. “You need him to be your best player.”

Panthers general manager Bill Zito praised Bobrovsky’s dedication, noting his intense work ethic and commitment to preparation. “It’s not a secret. The way he prepares for games every day is impressive,” Zito stated.

Historically, Bobrovsky has faced criticism for his playoff performance; prior to 2023, he had never advanced beyond the second round. However, he changed that narrative after leading the Panthers to an upset victory over the record-setting Boston Bruins in 2023. This season, he holds a 12-5 record with a 2.11 GAA and three shutouts.

In this year’s Cup Final, Bobrovsky faces formidable opponents like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl of the Oilers. “It makes it interesting,” he said of facing such stars. Bobrovsky will need to replicate his previous success against them, having achieved a 1.25 GAA in last year’s finals against Edmonton.

“Being here for a third time is definitely a blessing, and I appreciate the opportunity,” he expressed about his chances at winning the championship. With the Panthers eager to defend their title, Bobrovsky’s solid play could be vital in achieving this goal.
