Bologna Faces Critical Injury Crisis Ahead of Key Matches
Bologna Football Club is grappling with a serious injury crisis ahead of crucial matches against Genoa, Aston Villa, and AC Milan. The Italian side, which competes in Serie A, has faced setbacks with four players sustaining injuries in a single day. This development places enormous pressure on the team, which has already been operating beyond its usual capabilities this season.
The Rossoblu, as they are affectionately known, have struggled in the league, securing only one victory—a 2-1 win against Monza on September 22—alongside six draws and two losses. Coach Vincenzo Italiano disclosed these challenges during a press conference today, where he also expressed concerns about the upcoming clash against Genoa.
Among the injured players, Martin Erlic will be sidelined for a month due to a Grade I lesion to the femoral bicep in his left leg. Meanwhile, Michal Aebischer’s situation remains uncertain as further evaluations for tendinitis in his left adductor are scheduled for next week. Samuel Iling-Junior suffered a strain to the medial ligament in his left knee, and the duration of his recovery is yet to be determined. Dan Ndoye is dealing with a minor muscular issue but remains a doubt for Bologna’s next matches.
The coach also noted that Jhon Lucumi is not at full fitness, which casts doubt on his participation in the forthcoming game against Genoa. The team’s injury woes do not end there, as they still have long-term absentees such as Nicolò Cambiaghi and Lewis Ferguson, both of whom are recovering from knee ligament surgeries.
This predicament comes as they prepare to face Genoa at the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris. Genoa currently stands at 17th place in the league standings with only one win, two draws, and four losses this season. They have conceded 15 goals and achieved just one clean sheet, while their expected goals (xG) and expected goals against (xGA) rates are concerning.
Genoa’s starting goalkeeper, Pierluigi Gollini, who has a record of 68 wins, 51 draws, and 40 losses, will face Bologna’s Lukasz Skorupski. Skorupski, who boasts a career save percentage of 71.7, will have to shoulder significant responsibility in the upcoming matches, given the team’s current predicament.
