Boston – The Boston Bruins have officially signed goaltender Jeremy Swayman to an eight-year contract extension, as announced by General Manager Don Sweeney on October 6. The deal, which will keep Swayman with the team through the 2031-32 season, carries an annual NHL cap hit of $8.25 million.

Swayman’s performance during the 2023-24 season played a significant role in his contract extension. The goaltender appeared in 44 games, achieving a record of 25-10-8, with a goals against average (GAA) of 2.53 and a save percentage of .916. During the playoffs, he further impressed with a 2.15 GAA and a .933 save percentage over 12 games.

Throughout his career with the Bruins, Swayman has played in 132 games, compiling a remarkable record of 79-33-15, a 2.34 GAA, and a .919 save percentage. He currently ranks fifth in franchise history in terms of goals against average and is fourth in save percentage.

In the 2023-24 season, among NHL goaltenders with a minimum of 25 games played, Swayman ranked eighth in goals against average and was tied for fifth in save percentage. The 25-year-old was chosen for the 2024 NHL All-Star Game via the All-Star Fan Vote and showcased his talent with a career-high of 43 saves in a game against the Dallas Stars in February 2024.

Swayman, who hails from Anchorage, Alaska, was initially selected by Boston in the fourth round, 111th overall, during the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He was also named to the NHL All-Rookie Team in 2022, following an impressive 2021-22 season where he led rookie goaltenders in wins, GAA, and save percentage.

The agreement marks the end of a challenging period of negotiations, which had extended over two summers. Last year, the Bruins had opted for arbitration with Swayman, and earlier this year, Bruins President Cam Neely had noted discussions of alternative offers.

Swayman, who held the status of a restricted free agent, missed all of training camp due to the negotiations. As per NHL rules, a December 1 deadline loomed for Swayman to sign and avoid missing the entire season.

The terms of the contract make Swayman one of the highest-paid goaltenders in the NHL, positioned among the likes of Sergei Bobrovsky, Andrei Vasilevskiy, and Connor Hellebuyck. Despite having never served a complete season as the sole number-one goalie, his performance during the playoffs substantiates his lucrative new contract.

Additionally, to balance the roster and salary cap, the Bruins traded Linus Ullmark during the offseason, acquiring Joonas Korpisalo and several future assets like a first-round draft pick from the Ottawa Senators. Head Coach Jim Montgomery prepared the team for Swayman’s absence, highlighting Korpisalo and Brandon Bussi as key figures during the interim period.

The Bruins are set to open their regular season against the Florida Panthers in Sunrise, continuing a pattern of strong regular seasons and seeking to break past recent playoff hurdles.
