Boston Marathon Grand Marshals Bill Rodgers Bob Hall

BOSTON, Mass. — The 129th Boston Marathon, set for April 21, 2025, will honor two legendary figures in the sport as grand marshals. Four-time Boston Marathon champion Bill Rodgers and wheelchair racing pioneer Bob Hall were announced as the official grand marshals by the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) on Wednesday.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Rodgers’ first win in the prestigious race. The Connecticut native, known as ‘Boston Billy,’ claimed victory in 1975 and went on to win again in 1978, 1979, and 1980, solidifying his legacy in Boston Marathon history. Meanwhile, Hall made history in 1975 as the first officially recognized wheelchair athlete to race the Boston Marathon, completing the course in 2:58:00 under a special condition set by the race director.

“Bob changed everything. This is the guy who changed everything for our country and globally because it’s a global sport,” said Rodgers of Hall during an announcement ceremony. Hall’s participation in the marathon led to the creation of the wheelchair division, which has since fostered greater inclusion for athletes with disabilities.

Hall, who finished third in the Boston Marathon in 1978, 1980, and 1981, has continued to advocate for athletes with disabilities throughout his career. He is also being honored this year with the Rick and Dick Hoyt Award, recognizing his contributions to the sport. “People like Bill, other runners, helping perpetuate the growth of inclusion of people with disabilities, particularly in the marathon, where it’s very obviously successful,” Hall stated in appreciation.

As grand marshals, Rodgers and Hall will lead the field from Hopkinton to Boylston Street, signaling the commencement of the race and providing inspiration to thousands of participants. The event typically draws over 30,000 runners and is a significant occasion in the world of sports and community.

Last year, former New England Patriots star Rob Gronkowski served as grand marshal, following Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz in 2023. The B.A.A. continues to honor both the tradition of the marathon and the advancements in sports inclusion that figures like Hall represent.

The Boston Marathon, part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, attracts elite runners and casual participants alike, representing a range of ages and backgrounds united by their love for the sport. For more information regarding the event and its participants, visit the B.A.A. website.
